Clutches - what can we do?

Clutch inspections & diagnostics – checking pedal feel, fluid leaks, and clutch bite point.

Did you know? A slipping clutch often starts with subtle signs like a high bite point or engine revs rising without extra speed. Early checks can prevent sudden failure.

Clutch replacement – complete kit fitting (clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing).

Value add: We fit a complete kit - clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing - backed by a warranty for long-lasting, smooth gear changes.

Clutch cable or hydraulic line replacement – fixing stiff or non-returning pedals.

Tip: A frayed cable or leaking hydraulic line can cause a stiff or non-returning pedal. Replacing them quickly protects the clutch itself.

Clutch fluid change & bleeding – removing air and ensuring smooth hydraulic operation.

Did you know? Old or air-contaminated fluid can make the pedal spongy. A proper flush restores firm, consistent clutch action.

Dual-mass flywheel (DMF) replacement – essential on many modern diesels and high-torque engines.

Value add: Many modern diesels and high-torque engines rely on a DMF to damp vibrations. Replacing it with the clutch saves labour costs and avoids repeat work.

Slave & master cylinder replacement – repairing leaks or pressure loss in hydraulic systems.

Tip: Worn cylinders can leak internally, causing sudden loss of clutch pressure. Swift replacement keeps you safely on the road.

Clutch release bearing replacement – curing noisy or rough clutch engagement.

Did you know? A noisy whirring when you press the pedal often points to a worn release bearing - changing it early prevents damage to the pressure plate.

Clutch fork & pivot repairs – addressing worn or bent components that affect smooth gear changes.

Value add: These small components are vital for smooth operation. Servicing or replacing them during a clutch job helps your new clutch last longer.

High-performance or heavy-duty clutch upgrades – for towing, performance or commercial vehicles.

Tip: Ideal for towing, carrying heavy loads or performance driving - these uprated clutches handle extra torque and heat without slipping.

Post-repair road testing & adjustments – ensuring correct operation and warranty compliance.

Value add: Every clutch service includes a road test and fine adjustment to guarantee smooth, reliable gear engagement.

Common signs include a high or changing bite point, difficulty selecting gears, engine revs rising without increased speed (slipping), or grinding noises when shifting.

Most clutches last 50,000–100,000 miles, but it depends on driving style, traffic conditions and vehicle type. Stop-start urban driving can shorten lifespan and so does resting your foot on the clutch pedal "riding the clutch".

You may be able to drive short distances, but continued use can damage the flywheel and gearbox. We recommend prompt inspection and repair.

We replace the clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing, and inspect or replace the flywheel and hydraulic components if needed.

Many modern diesel and high-torque engines use a DMF to reduce vibration. When worn, it can cause rattling or juddering and is best replaced with the clutch to save labour costs.

Possible causes include a frayed cable, a worn master/slave cylinder, or hydraulic fluid issues. Early checks prevent further damage.

This often indicates air in the hydraulic system or a leaking master/slave cylinder. We can bleed or replace the system to restore normal operation.

Yes. It runs off brake fluid which should be changed every 2 years. Old or contaminated fluid can cause a spongy pedal and premature wear. We recommend changing it when the clutch is replaced or if contamination is suspected.

Most jobs take half a day to a full day, depending on the vehicle and whether the flywheel or hydraulic components also need attention.

An M.O.T doesn’t directly test the clutch, but if the clutch is so worn that it affects safety (e.g. difficult gear selection), the vehicle may fail.

Avoid resting your foot on the pedal, don’t hold the car on a hill with the clutch, and drive smoothly to reduce friction and heat.
